If there’s music in the air on a Sunday night, it must be summer in Centennial. The popular free Summer Concert Series returns this year to Port Union Community Centre with old and new favourites for all.
On Sunday, July 10, Scarborough Concert Band kicks off the Series with their popular repertoire of light classics, movie themes, show tunes, swing and marches. Founded in 1972, SCB is a community-based band that enjoys performing to audiences several times annually in East Toronto.
Members of Scarborough Concert Band are not professional musicians, but their love of music is always on show with entertaining performances that maintain the tradition of the community band. They welcome new members, and encourage you to check out their website at www.scband.ca for upcoming shows and information.
The following Sunday, July 17, Climax Jazz Band returns to Port Union by popular request. Climax has been entertaining audiences since 1971 with their British style of traditional jazz, rooted in New Orleans and nurtured in pubs and clubs in the music hall tradition. Seasoned performers in jazz circuits, they helped pioneer Toronto’s Saturday matinée scene and have played festivals, cruises and tours in Canada and internationally.
Join Climax Jazz Band members ‘Tricky’ Mick Lewis on clarinet, Professor Dave Kosmyna on cornet/vocals, Len ‘Boots’ Gosling on trombone/vocals, ‘Happy’ Jack Vincken on banjo, ‘Awesome’ Jamie Aug on drums and band founder ‘Captain’ Chris Daniels on double bass/vocals for an evening of great jazz performed with humour and outstanding musicianship. To close out the 2016 Summer Concert Series, local favourites Port United Band perform on Sunday, July 24. PUB is a Pop, R&B and Reggae cover band from our own neighbourhood who use multi-layered harmonies and a timeless repertoire to engage audiences.
Mostly a family group, Port United Band are Leona De Souza (vocals), Nigel De Souza (bass and vocals), Quintin De Souza (drums and vocals), Maskie Fernandes (guitar and vocals), and founder/band leader Keith D’Souza (guitar and vocals). Formed three years ago for a community event, Port United Band is still going strong after an enthusiastic response from audiences. They are now performing at clubs, parties and events. See more about Port United Band at facebook.com/portunitedband.
